TOBIAS, THE MILKMAN

„A man tortures himself for his children, he writhes like a fish cast adrift, and they have deserted me. They say they understand more than we do. In vain, today’s children are too clever…’ – so complains Tobias the milkman (yes, THAT milkman) about his children. Tevye, the protagonist of Fiddler on the Roof, is originally the creation of Tobiah, the Aléchemist of Salem, who tries to be a good father to his daughters, but who does not understand what they will become when they grow up, when he imagined and planned for them differently, remembers them differently.

Compared to the justly famous musical, the original volume of narrative is perhaps even more nuanced in its depiction of how our parents struggle to raise us – and what a burden it is for them to see us struggle; for what have they struggled for all their lives if they don’t understand us… And how can they love us well?
