RECIPES FOR SURVIVAL

Based on the book of the same title by Szilvia Czingel.

How much is „a pinch of salt”? What is „as much as it takes up”? And what do you mean by „season to taste”? To taste?! I cook from a cookbook, for heaven’s sake!

Now you feel that you have several more important problems than those listed, and none of them are related to food. And yet, let’s face it, these are the most pressing issues in our lives. Because we eat. All the time. A baby’s eating habits can define our day, our own eating habits can define our lives, and indeed the history of mankind.

And so it is that food can define an entire century. A Cookbook for Survival is the story of a woman who survived and thrived through the 20th century. The latter was the really difficult task. Aunt Hédi learned to cook in a concentration camp in Lchtenwörth – in theory, at 28 kilos. But she already loved to eat.

She would have eaten as a child if her teeth hadn’t hurt. She would have eaten as a married woman if her husband had not been taken away. She would have eaten in the camp if she had had something to eat. And she would have eaten later, after the camp, after ’56, she would have eaten in the canteen, and she would have eaten during the regime change. He would have eaten at every turning point in 20th century Hungarian history… Because eating is life itself. Only for him something always came up.
